Blueberries 101

This morning we picked blueberries with Mamaw & Pop Pop. We’ve picked all kinds of fruits and veggies in the past but this is our first time picking blueberries. We filled three containers full of deliciously sweet blueberries. We made sure we tried to pick the ones that were the ripest. Zoe would pick 5 blueberries and eat 3, pick 4, eat 2, and so on and so forth. Her container took forever to fill up but I couldn’t blame her for ‘testing’ the goods.

As we were walking to the car, Mamaw says, “We need to make a blueberry pie.” Yeah buddy, that sounded like a perfect idea. I didn’t have pie crust so I quick called Dana and she picked up a pie crust and headed over for some baking.

I’m going to be sad to see my parents go. We’ve had a really good time and it’s never enough time.

Canada

Summer is in full swing and our first adventure of the summer was a road trip to Canada. My parents flew up for my birthday then we hit the road to visit my relatives in Canada. We were gone 6 days! The last time Zoe was there she was too young to remember, but this time I’m sure she won’t soon forget.

The car ride was the worst part but as soon as we crossed the border into Canada, we put the long drive behind us and enjoyed everything Canadian. My Aunt and Uncle made all the yummy Canadian dishes I grew up eating. Zoe didn’t skip a beat and ate everything in sight. We had poutine which is a common Canadian dish, made with fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds.  Of course we couldn’t miss out on some delicious homemade creton, which is a pork spread with onions and spices. Creton is usually served on toast as part of a traditional Quebec breakfast.  Those are just a few of the delicious Canadian deserts and meals we enjoyed.

I’m not sure what Zoe thought it would be like in Canada but she was in awe when she found out not many people spoke English. TV was in French, they had different ‘money’, the street signs were not in English, they had a pool, and not all of my family spoke English. None of that stopped Zoe from trying to communicate. We also got a visit from my cousin who is pregnant and due in September. She looked great and Zoe said she got to feel the baby kick.

I could go on and on about how wonderful this trip was but the icing on the cake was taking Zoe to the Montreal Biodome. (http://espacepourlavie.ca/biodome ) We spent the morning checking out all the exhibits and enjoying quality time together.

Shelli didn’t join us on this trip but next month we will all be together on another adventure. Shelli was missed however, she had some quality time with her best friend while we were gone so in the end, it all worked out.

I’m looking forward to returning to Canada after the baby is born.

HA! HA! HA! (My pillow baby!)

Thank you Aunt Diane, Uncle Yvone, Stephanie, and Norm for a fantastic time!
We love you!

Hospital Visit

While we were in the Finger Lakes, Shelli got sick but we kind of assumed it was food poisoning. When we got home Sunday evening Shelli was still under the weather.  Shelli made an appointment to see the doctor first thing Monday morning to see what was going on. When she went to the doctor they did all kinds of blood work and a CAT scan to find out her white blood count was sky high and her colon was hugely inflamed. They admitted her to the hospital asap to get the count down and get some fluids back into her body and monitor her progress over the next few days.

After her last ordeal in the hospital she wasn’t a happy camper to be anywhere near a hospital however, she made it through like a champ. 3 days of antibiotics and fluids and she is getting back to her old self. It turns out she had Clostridium difficile. She was ‘quarantined’, fixed up, and thankfully sent home.

Zoe seemed to be okay. We were worried about her remembering the horrific incident we went through last time.  We made sure Zoe understood Mimi was only in to get fluids back into her body and Zoe seemed at ease with it. I reassured Zoe that Mimi was okay and that she would be home soon. When Zoe did see Mimi, she was helpful and always wants to take care of her. It’s so endearing to seeing Zoe play nurse. They made us wear gowns and gloves before entering Shelli’s room (for contamination reasons). I didn’t let Zoe see Shelli until she was about to be discharged in fear she would catch Mimi’s funk. (I went to sit with Shelli during the day while Z was in school) So, when Zoe finally got in to see her Mimi, she was one happy girl! She also had to check to make sure everything sounded right in Mimi’s chest before they wheeled her down to the car in her wheel chair.

As for Shelli and I, I’m not sure there is anything we can’t get through. At the end of the day, we are always there for one another and that is all that matters!

Finger Lakes Weekend

In the beginning of the year, Shelli saw an add for Greek Peak Resort (http://greekpeak.net/ ), in the Finger Lakes area of NY. We booked it and originally thought we’d take Zoe for her adoption day but, Mommy had surgery then so we had to push it back a few months until I was fully recovered and could join in all the fun.

We took Zoe out of school half day on Friday and headed up to the resort. It was about a 3-hour drive. The weather was awful however, but we didn’t let that get in the way of us having a blast. PLUS, the resort had an indoor water park so rain didn’t really matter once we got checked it.

This place was AMAZING! The rooms were like studio apartments with a full kitchen, DVD player, a dining room table, flat screen TV, fireplace, and a huge bathroom. The first night we got there, we threw our stuff in the room and explored the resort. Checking out the pools, game room, lobby, kids activities, gift shop, and everything else the place had to offer. Once we knew where everything was, we set out to find a grocery store to pick up a few goodies. We mainly bought breakfast and lunch stuff and some snacks. We also checked out the town to see what kind of things they had going on.

Saturday, we woke up early for a hike at Buttermilk Falls State Park. It was still sprinkling outside so we just came to terms with the fact we were going to get wet. This park had the most beautiful waterfalls. It was one of the prettiest hikes we’ve ever done. When we finished the hike, we had a snack and went back to the hotel to spend the rest of the day/night at the indoor waterpark. The waterpark had a wave pool, several slides, a basketball pool, a kiddy pool, a hot tub, and tons of other cool stuff. Mommy and Mimi even went down the slides a few times. To say we made a ‘splash’ is an understatement!

Sunday, Mimi wasn’t feeling real well so Zoe and I spent the morning together. I made parfaits for breakfast, then we went back to the indoor waterpark for a little while, and then before we checked out of the hotel, Zoe and I had an appointment at the Spa. Yep, The Spa! Zoe had her very first professional pedicure. We had a blast! They sat us side by side as they did our toes and we had the best time giggling and talking about the weekend as it was coming to a close.

I really hope to re-visit this resort again. It was very fun and extremely relaxing. Good times had by all.
